During the gas crisis of January 2009, a number of European citizens suffered from shortages of supply. This was the case particularly for Member States that were less interconnected with the rest of the Internal Energy Market. During the crisis, the rules of the security of gas supply directive (like calling for the Gas Coordination Group) were applied with positive results in a number of Member States, but both Parliament and Council considered that the directive had to be reinforced to increase the security of gas supply.
