Billy Joel fait partie des artistes ayant vendu le plus de disques aux États-Unis. Les années 80 couronnent son succès qui le mène sur de longues tournées, notamment à Moscou et à Leningrad, alors séparés du reste de l'Europe par le Rideau de fer. Fin 1994, après avoir annoncé sa retraite, le chanteur reprend du service, entre concerts exceptionnels et albums rétrospectifs. En 2006 il effectuera même une nouvelle tournée à travers les États-Unis. Puis il y aura aussi la sortie en 2011 de son double album live intitulé "Live at the Shea Stadium". Ce concert a été le dernier donné au mythique Shea Stadium de New York en juillet 2008, un mois avant sa démolition. Billy Joel peut se vanter d'avoir enrichi nos vies par son univers musical où il semblerait que sa potion magique il la tienne de sa propre citation: "Je préfère rire avec les pêcheurs que pleurer avec les saints".
