La sortie officielle de ce nouvel opus en ce mois de mars 2013 est un évènement musical planétaire, annoncé le 8 janvier 2013, le jour du 66e anniversaire de l'artiste et dont les 14 titres tournaient déjà en boucle sur les plateformes de téléchargement. Pour les fans, à noter que l'édition Deluxe contient trois titres supplémentaires. L'édition vinyle est prévue pour le 25 mars 2013. Le clip de "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" a été réalisé par Floria Sigismondi, David Bowie y apparaît aux côtés de l'actrice britannique Tilda Swinton.
Le chanteur aux 40 années de carrière recevra un des plus bel hommage avec l'exposition "David Bowie Is" au Victoria et Albert Museum de Londres, du 23 mars au 11 août prochains. L'un des points forts de cette rétrospective sera le rapport qu'il a eu avec la mode qui, en plus de son talent de chanteur auteur-compositeur, en a sculpté un personnage atypique et surprenant.
Le rockeur londonien, dans une interview de Guillaume Duran en 2003, témoignait de son humilité dans sa réponse à la question du journaliste "Est-ce que ça s'apprend d'être rock-star?" et David Bowie de répondre: "Dans mon cas, oui. Mais ça m'a pris beaucoup de temps!".
